Crouch Cover
Cover no longer crouches the player against their will.
What: The first version of low cover crouched the character automatically. Walking near a waist-high wall dropped them, whether or not that was what the player wanted. It read as the game taking the controls away, so I turfed it. Crouching is a deliberate button press now, and a low wall only grants cover if the character is crouching next to it already. Who could see whom had a matching problem. The game worked it out from the middle of the character's body rather than from their eyes, so a standing character could not shoot over a chest-high wall they were plainly looking across. Sight lines start at eye level now, and they sit lower when the character crouches. Corner cover had problems when the cover wall was small and two corners were close together. Letting the character switch between them made them jitter back and forth, and occasionally snap to somewhere they had never been. The character commits to one corner now and stays there.
Why: If the game takes the controls off a player near a wall, they stop going near walls.
